Bring back our girls!

All attempt to put the words together on Monday proved abortive — I kept typing and deleting.

I was still in secondary school when over 200 Chibok girls at Borno State were abducted in 2014. Like my then principal would say, it was our sister-school — A girls’ only government boarding school like ours. We kept praying and telling the government “Bring back our girls!”.

… but were our girls released? — our then girls who are now women. Some were eventually released but more than 80 are still missing till date. Names of those released was published in newspapers years ago (can’t remember the exact year between 2015-2017).

2014 was the year I heard the most insensitive thing ever! Of all persons to take the blame for the abduction — some blamed parents for taking their kids to a boarding school. I know some Nigerians are born to be annoying but this? — below the belt, under the foot, bottom barrel!

Four years later, another girls’ only school was attacked. Over 100 Dapchi girls were abducted in 2018, at Yobe State. Is it how five girls died in the process? Or how all the girls were released except Leah Sharibu? Why is Leah Sharibu still yet to be released?

Seven years later, another girls’ only school. This time around, they succeeded at taking 25 girls after killing the hero Vice Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku who did a good job shielding the girls.

I attended a girls’ only boarding school for six years and I served in a girls’ only boarding school for a year — it could have been anyone.

On my WhatsApp status, I expressed how I’ve never really understood the ideology behind negotiating with terrorists. Out of all responses I got, someone dropped the one that fits the description of “ogbenutan” — repentant terrorists being paid salary.

There’s nowhere to hang the ball in this particular post. My tired is honestly tired! I only made reference to school girls abduction in this post — these terrorists invade churches, kill people on their own farm, show up at burials to kill more people… the list goes on.

Most of us have been talking since 2014 but … over eleven years and these terrorists have graduated to having social media accounts where they confidently show their faces.
